Urban graffiti fragment in the Gängeviertel — the alternative cultural district of Hamburg. This historically valuable quarter was once a laconic piece for investors and developers of elite offices and houses. In 2009, it was planned to demolish up to 80% of buildings. In protest, about two hundred artists, creative personalities, eccentrics and just urban madmen occupied empty buildings and arranged workshops, galleries and concerts there. "Come to the alleys (German "Komm in die Gänge!"), become a part of the last great adventure of Hamburg! We will demand from the city authorities that they save the area from financial chaos and preserve the real quality of life there" — the organizers persuaded other Hamburgers. This protest did not only reach the public of Hamburg but landed among the top news on the agenda of many newspapers across Germany! In the end, the artists did win: the Gängeviertel was rescued, and the reconstruction works are currently underway. Besides, the initiative artists managed to draw the attention of the city administration to the fact that a rich city with a developed market economy insufficiently supports its artists: sometimes the latter simply have no place to create because of high rent prices. And in general, one may put a question mark here: how often do individuals think about the significant role of their "I" in improving our cities, countries and the whole globe? After all, "We" (German "Wir") that can bring positive changes consists of many of such "I"...
