"To the age its art, to the art its freedom" is the legendary motto of the Vienna Secessionists. 1897 was the year of upheaval and is considered to be the year of the birth of Viennese Modernism. Gustav Klimt left the conservative Arthouse with other artists and founded a new artists' association under the name of the Secession. The Secession style is considered a Viennese variant of Art Nouveau, which determined this epoch throughout Europe. Known in France and Belgium as "Art Nouveau", in Anglo-Saxon countries as "Modern Style" or in Italy as "Stile Liberty". This quote is on the Vienna Secession building and is probably as famous as the building itself. If you ever asked who found this sentence for the Secessionists, very few would tell. It was neither Gustav Klimt nor any other artist of the Secession. It was a talented journalist Ludwig Hevesi, a native Hungarian and proud Austrian, who always had his soul in both capitals.
