The eight-hectare Fischerinsel (English: the Island of Fishers) in the heart of Berlin was the oldest part of the medieval city of Cölln. Until the 15th century, wealthy fishermen and sailors lived there. In the 17th century, the area developed into a quarter of the poor people - the so-called "Fischerkiez" (English: the neighborhood of fishermen). The Fischerinsel preserved its medieval-picturesque flair until the Second World War, which unfortunately destroyed the older buildings on the island. A documentary photograph of Berlin.
