Since the reunification of Germany, Berlin and its eastern part, in particular, have undergone massive reconstruction and transformation. The German capital turned into the city of numerous construction sites. Construction works at the crossing of Friedrichstraße and Unter den Linden are taking place due to the westward extension of the East Berlin subway line U5, which currently ends at Alexanderplatz, towards the Brandenburg Gate. In 2020 the U5 line should finally be connected with the U55 line — the shortest and the most expensive line in the history of the Berlin underground, which opened in August 2009 on the short route: the Central Railway Station — the Bundestag — the Brandenburg Gate.
